Milestones:
The Courier News is a consolidation of The Evening News (founded in 1884), the Plainfield Daily Press (founded in 1887) and the Plainfield Courier (founded in 1891). Frank Gannett became a partner in the newspaper in 1927 and bought full ownership in 1940. The newspaper was based in Plainfield until 1972, when it moved to Bridgewater. It was published six days a week until a Sunday edition was added in September 1987.
About Central Jersey:
Central Jersey is a highly educated, high-income growth market ranking as one of the wealthiest in the nation. Bridgewater is in the heart of Central New Jersey. Once a popular bedroom community for workers in New York, Central Jersey has grown dramatically in the past two decades to become a major market in its own right. The affluent area is known as "the nation's medicine cabinet" because it is home to some of the world's largest pharmaceuticals companies. Also based in Central Jersey is telecommunications giant AT&T.
With rolling hills, pockets of open space and the scenic Raritan River, some communities in the region tout their quaint, rural charm. But many residents feel a development boom since the 1980s has led to suburban sprawl, threatening to turn once-green communities into urban centers.
